The Country of Immigrants: Rescuing Syrian Refugees A refugee is defined as â€Å"someone who has been forced to leave a country because of war or for religious or political reasons† in the Merriam-Webster online dictionary (n.d.). Millions of people have been escaping the Islamic State and the Assad government since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War. They have been searching for asylum in European countries (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 2015), such as Germany, Turkey, and elsewhere. President Obama has recently decided to resettle at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the United States within the next year (The White House, 2015). In March of 2011, BBC News reported that Syrian authorities arrested and tortured teenagers for vandalising a school wall with revolutionary propaganda, which soon led to pro-democracy protests. These protests were interrupted by security forces that opened fire on the protesters and killed several. Soon the political unrest trig gered demands for President Assad’s resignation. The government used force to stop the protests, but this only ensured more anger from the demonstrators. This was the beginning of the brutal war that is still occurring today. The violence escalated tremendously and has caused over 250,000 deaths as of August 2015 (Asare, Gritten, Offer, Rodgers, 2015). Asare et al. (2015) reports that his number includes the deaths of more than 6000 civilians killed by barrel bombs alone.
